Proprietors Mark and Gail Schulte knew that their dream was to own a sweet slice of paradise here in Key West. What they didn’t bank on was having the fortune of owning the strikingly beautiful and appropriately named Suite Dreams Inn. Even more surprising was that the couple would go on to be wed right in the tropical courtyard of this unique guest house experience. According to Mark, “we were engaged since 2010. Many asked when we were going to get married. We decided that we would get married after we bought our dream.”

As Gail and Mark lead a tour of the property past the Exora lined pool and around the blooming orchids, it becomes apparent how much energy and attention goes into maintaining this multiple suite compound, anchored by the crown jewel — the Hemingway Key West Retreat. We took a look at the most compelling features of this vacation getaway and reasons to stay.

Love Is in the Air

The owners themselves tied the knot in the intimate courtyard of Suite Dreams Inn, complete with an elevated boardwalk teeming with floral accents and an outdoor setting that comfortably catered to a party of over twenty. Stroll out front and you’ll discover the “engagement” cabana, so dubbed for the intricate icicle lighting and airy feel that create a dreamy spot to ask that important question. The one bed one bath Garden Suite has a sleeper sofa and a luxurious memory foam California King bed.  This aesthetic throwback to the Truman era can be readily sprinkled with candle lit paths of rose petals in recognition of your special anniversary. Should you find romance on your agenda, the cozy lodgings and tropical grounds will definitely satisfy your needs.

Explore the Courtyard Gardens

Call it the Tree of Festivities or centerpiece attraction, the courtyards central mango tree is uniquely decorated throughout the seasons. At any given point you may find it bearing shamrocks, Easter eggs, Cupid’s bag of tricks, or this year’s Fantasy Fest theme. Around the corner you’ll find Jamaican coconut trees, wild Exoras, a secluded in-ground swimming pool, and even one or two felines who are descendants from the world famous Hemingway House cats. The leafy Von Phister address helps add to the exotic garden atmosphere that’ll be sure to have you strolling around or comfortably sunbathing outdoors during the peak of summer.

Come for Two or Stay With Many

The unique set up of Suite Dreams Inn allows you to stay as a couple or to arrive as a large group. Though each of the five suites guarantee complete privacy — the Hemingway Key West Retreat providing its own clothing optional swimming pool — larger parties have the option of booking and connecting multiple suites to create one expanded space for special events or group gatherings. At a recent wedding celebration during the height of season, thirty guests along with the bride and groom parties were comfortably gathered for day long activities.  Weddings are perfect for approximately 50 guests.

Experience the History

The original owners, Robert and Yvonne Snidow, met in Paris following World War I and moved to construct the initial house in 1933. Truman Capote. Albert Einstein. President Truman. These were just some of the influential personalities that The Snidows would entertain at this very location. Their daughter, Charlotte, would go on to instruct the Hemingway Boys in French — thus providing the context and name for Suite Dreams Inn’s Hemingway Key West Retreat. Present day, it would not be surprising to occasionally run into visiting legends and local entertainers who favor the proximity of the Casa Marina area and accessibility to Higgs Beach.
