Even the old timers can’t remember a time when the landmark, La Concha Hotel did not anchor the corner of Fleming and Duval Streets. The towering structure was the tallest building in Key West when it was built in 1926. Come to think of it, it still is! Located in the heart of Key West, it’s the best location to see the sights.
Built in an era of heady expansion in Key West, through the years, the likes of Hemingway and Tennessee Williams added to the stimulating conversations within the La Concha’s historic walls. The library nook off the lobby is a nod to authors who drew their literary inspiration from Key West.
The hotel remains a must visit destination for Key West hospitality. Welcoming crisply striped awnings decorate the building facade as you’re reminded of traditional island charm. Graceful palms surround the raised open pool area perched just above street level. Wanting to explore, enter through the iron gates, beneath the porte cochere and into the lobby for your first glimpse of the legendary La Concha Hotel and Spa of today, a Crowne Plaza Hotel.
A cool oasis awaits you. The bellman greets you warmly as your eyes take in the subdued elegance of the interior’s texture and form. Comfortable tufted banquettes invite you to linger. Transfixed by the backdrop of undulating colors, the lobby bar beckons for cool refreshment. Do try one of their signature cocktails.
Palm dappled light from curving panorama windows draws you up to the dining level where a school of metal fish adorning the walls catches your attention. Why not take a seat in the sumptuous leather wing chair and peruse the unique island inspired menu offering? If you happen in during Happy Hour, sample the daily $4.30 appetizer special – you are at 430 Duval.
After your culinary adventure, wander through the library on your way to the top, as in Top Spa, for the very best view in all of Key West. The original elevator with wood paneled walls and brass trim climbs the seven levels. The doors open and all you can say is “Wow!”
Above the treetops, see an unobstructed view of the city and blue ocean waters beyond. “Sign me up for every service.” You’ll want to spend your day enjoying this bird’s eye view from the serenity of the soothing treatment rooms.
So refreshed…so nourished…so relaxed. You might want to send yourself over top with a beautiful beaujolais at the wonderful world of Wine-O, the hotel’s icing on the cake. Wine-O features over 200 fine wines from around the world. You needn’t be a wine connoisseur to enjoy Wine-O, but the experience will leave you feeling like one!
And you haven’t even checked in yet. Wait till you see your room……to be continued.
