When you think of the word theater, drama, acting and show business all come to mind. That’s just what you can expect from one of the liveliest productions in the Keys except the stars of this fascinating show have fins, flippers and feathers! Welcome to Theater of the Sea, Interactive Theater at Its Best!
Greeted by meticulous landscaping and a towering waterfall, you’ll realize you have arrived at a magical place. The 17 acre lagoons and grounds of Theater of the Sea, family owned and operated since 1946, provide a caring home for marine mammals and offer a sharing environment to inspire their visitors to a greater awareness and sensitivity towards the animals, the environment, and conservation issues. The lagoons and lush, tropical gardens are home to Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, California sea lions, as well as sea turtles, tropical and game fish, sharks, stingrays, alligators, marine invertebrates, and birds.
General admission to the park includes the dolphin, sea lion, parrot and guided marine life shows, access to the lagoon side beach, and a 5-minute bottomless boat ride around the dolphin lagoon. Tour the natural environment and learn about the Florida mangrove community. The experience of Theater of the Sea is interactive theater at its best, as you may enjoy a dolphin, sea lion or shark and ray interaction.
The personalities of the sea inhabitants steal the show as they willingly perform to the accolades of the crowd. The staff at Theater of the Sea truly loves what they do as evidenced by the joy they exhibit interacting with the animals and sharing their enthusiasm with the visitors.
Plan to spend half a day or more to take in all the activities and exhibits of Theater of the Sea. After enjoying the shows and programs, be sure to explore the unique gift shop, take time for a snack at Nicky’s grill, and relax on the private lagoon-side beach to take in some snorkeling and sunbathing. You may want to reserve a day or more to take in all the activities and exhibits of Theater of the Sea.
For a more in depth exploration, nothing tops Theater of the Sea’s Eco- adventure and Snorkel Cruise, a 4 hour boat tour that covers 13 miles on the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Bay. See amazing underwater sights as an experienced captain takes you to the only living coral reef system in North America, and guides you around the beautiful islands of Islamorada on their spacious 30’ Parker boat. You will come away with an understanding and respect for Florida’s marine ecology and native plant life.
Theater of the Sea will be a highlight of your Keys adventure that you’ll long remember. Creating entertaining and enlightening experiences is what theater is all about. Theater of the Sea does that and more, deserving of a standing ovation.
