The Marathon Garden Club was organized in 1955 as a small group of civic-minded residents who wanted to help improve the appearance of the area. Their first project was to landscape the Chamber of Commerce property and raise money for further work. Soon their horticultural efforts were extended to highways, schools and public buildings. During the sixties their efforts to beautify the airport strip led to its being named as a Monroe County park. The club established a memorial garden at Fishermen’s Hospital and planted vegetation at Sombrero Beach.
