Pope Benedict XVI has designated a Key West church as a Minor Basilica, the Archdiocese of Miami announced.

Established in 1846, St. Mary Star of the Sea, the oldest church in the archdiocese, will become its first Minor Basilica, and the fifth in Florida.

Father John Baker, pastor of St. Mary Star of the Sea, made an official announcement to parishioners on Friday during the Mass of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Last year, Archbishop Thomas Wenski made the official request for the designation through the Holy See’s Congregation for the Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments.

A Mass with the conferral of the insignia of a basilica will be celebrated May 31st at St. Mary Star of the Sea at 1010 Windsor Ln.
